I don’t know about you but this summer is kicking my ass, hard.
When our childcare plans fell through I went from having more than enough time to do all the work, all the self-care, and all the fun I wanted to having just a couple hours a day where I can be productive with doing anything at all.
“You should have kids” they said. “It’ll be fun” they said. Sure.
In all seriousness more time with my kiddos while they’re young is probably not a bad thing, but it does mean I’m finding myself pulling out all the tricks and food hacks I can to stay somewhat healthy during the “fun”.
Even if you’re not chasing after kids, these hacks can be such a HUGE help when trying to stick to goals and keep up with a busy lifestyle.
I recently got my hands on a Ninja Creami, and let me tell you, I’m obsessed. I haven’t quite perfected my protein ice cream recipe yet, but I’m getting close! In the meantime, smoothies have been my go-to for a quick, nutrient-packed meal or snack.
Here’s my current favorite recipe:
The only thing that would make this smoothie better is if my kids actually liked smoothies. 😂
During the summer, I’m all about cold foods, especially salads. But let’s be real, despite what the internet says, salads can be a total time-suck with all that chopping and prepping. That’s why my hack is to make salads that stretch. If I’m spending time chopping, it better make a lot and last in the fridge. No soggy salads here, y’all!
Here are some of my favorites:
Let’s talk about a real game-changer: Crock-Pot or Instant Pot meat prep. The focus here is on making a big batch of a versatile protein that you can repurpose in a ton of different ways throughout the week. Think shredded chicken, pulled pork, or beef roast. You can toss it in salads, wrap it in tortillas, mix it with veggies, or throw it on a pizza. The possibilities are endless, and it saves you so much time. Spend a little time upfront, and enjoy the benefits all week long!
Here are a few of my favorite recipes:
Sometimes you just don’t have the time (or energy) to cook from scratch, and that’s where semi-homemade freezer meals come in. This hack is all about combining frozen premade components with fresh ingredients to save time without sacrificing nutrition. For example, I love buying Kevin’s Naturals Sous Vide Chicken Meals and pairing it with fresh veggies and frozen rice. It’s quick, convenient, and still healthy. You get the ease of ready-made elements with the freshness of your own additions. Perfect for those busy summer nights when you need a fast, nutritious meal! Let’s bust a myth right now: fruit is not going to make you fat or seriously mess with your blood sugar. Despite what you might see on social media, fruit is packed with fiber and other phytonutrients that are crucial for our health and microbiomes.
Summer is the BEST time to load up on all the fresh, delicious fruits. Think berries, stone fruits, cherries, and all those seasonal gems. Not only are they tasty, but they’re also hydrating and full of vitamins. So go ahead, enjoy that juicy peach or a handful of strawberries—your body will thank you!
Let’s talk about “Eat the Fridge Fridays,” one of my favorite tricks to prevent food waste and keep us from eating out. Here’s the deal: kiddos get to enjoy frozen pizza (or any other easy, fun food), while parents feast on random leftovers from the week. It’s a win-win! Not only does it make for a super simple meal, but it also clears out the fridge and ensures nothing goes to waste. Plus, it saves you the hassle of cooking yet another meal at the end of a busy week.
There you have it, y’all—my six go-to summer food hacks that are saving my sanity and keeping me on track. Whether you’re chasing kids or just trying to juggle a busy schedule, these tips can help you stay healthy without spending all your time in the kitchen.
